APRIL 22nd/23rd/24th/25th, 2010 - 8PM

Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory in conjunction with The Burning Monk Collective present Killer Queen, a new work written and performed by Peter Griggs. This collaborative solo performance includes the directorial vision of Wolfgang Lancelot Wachalovsky and the choreographic stylings of Robin Kurland-West.

This performance follows the life of a gay boxer, Paco the Pink Pounder, as he navigates the inherent homophobia within the boxing world as well as the prejudices from his own queer community. Combining text, movement, and the love for all things Freddie Mercury, Peter Griggs performs a tightly woven narrative loosely based on the lives of queer boxers everywhere.

The show examines "the queer experience" through the lens of an effeminate man of color by identifying sexual racism, and the divide between butch versus femme in the so called ring.

Paco the Pink Pounder, fights the walls of society as he bobs and weaves his way through the battles of identity, conformity and the contextualization of gender. Paco goes on jabbing at accepted truths, knocking out opponents, hoping that perhaps each battle might be the last one. All he knows is that he is a flaming queen who can kick anyone’s ass with a well-placed punch; he is after all, the original Killer Queen.

Performances run Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm at Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory (1519 Mission Street, San Francisco). Tickets are $15 to $20, sliding scale and are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
