1519 Mission, a 30 year legacy where many queer performance groups were housed is going dark.
Jon Sims gave life to this long lived tradition back in 1978. Originally the home of the first ever Openly Gay Marching Band, an institution that later gave life to many musical groups, one of which is the well known Gay Men Choir. Jon Sims Center for the Arts grew to become a laboratory of queer performance. After almost 25 years, it had to close it doors. In its wake MCVF took the torch and carried it out for almost 4 years. After almost 30 years of history, Fire code is forcing us out. MCVF is going dark, 1519 is no more.
Now at this crossroads, THEOFFCENTER, an initiative born out of MCVF and whose goal is to help manifest the next home for a queer performance incubator in SF, is organizing this one event to end all events at the 1519 Address.
A Wake, a ritual, a tribute to all who have passed by it, to all who have learned from it, to all who have witness queer performance within it.
July 31st, 2010, starting at 8pm, come show your colors and support this very important cause. $10 donation charge to help start the new process of getting a new home.
This event has no ending. we will be open all night. If you want to perform, let us know, a long list is already forming, email us at theoffcentersf@gmail.com
